The big 3 search engines, Google, Yahoo and MSN, have over three hundred billion webpages in their databases. For each webpage they need to work out where it will appear in the search results for any given search. There are two major factors that they use in order to do this.

Firstly, the number of incoming links that a website has - each link it counted as a vote for the website that it links to. However, not all votes are equal. A vote from a website that the search engine already considers to be of high value (which usually means that this website also has a lot of other websites linking to it) is worth a lot more than a website the search engines consider to be of a low value (perhaps a small site with very few, if any, links pointing to it).

Secondly, the search engines assess a number of aspects on the website itself in order to calculate where it will appear for any given search. These include the density of the search terms on the page (this should not be too high nor too low). They will also look at the way the page is set out, the names of files and images and, depending upon which search engine we are referring to, up to 25 to 30 other aspects.

This part of the service is just as important as the link campaigns as it provides the search engines with the "profile" it associates with a high worth site about a particular subject and search terms related to that subject. Should the client request it, for an additional fee, we will carry out their website changes on their behalf.

Nobody can absolutely guarantee top 10 search engine rankings and it would be unethical for anyone to claim that they can. What can be done is to provide a search engine optimisation guarantee that states if previously agreed search terms are not ranked within the top 10 on either Google, Yahoo or MSN (we aim to place your search terms within the top 10 of all 3 of these search engines) then at the very least your money is refunded - this is the type of guarantee we provide for our clients. Sponsored links are "paid for" placements on the search engines and can be achieved by anyone willing to pay the "per click" cost of such campaigns. Although utilising sponsored links falls under the broad definition of "search engine marketing" it is quite different, and should not be confused with, search engine optimization.
